本片依据史蒂芬·雷贝洛出书于1998年的同名纪实文学改编。　　记载了希区柯克（安东尼·霍普金斯 Anthony Hopkins 饰）为「精力病患者」的拍摄所支付的各种尽力。在片子的拍摄进程中,他与老婆阿尔玛（海伦·米伦 Helen Mirren 饰）的关联也酿成了各人存眷的核心。　　尔后「精力病患者」成为了希区柯克经典代表作之一,该片报告了女演员珍妮特·李（斯嘉丽·约翰逊 Scarlett Johansson）表演的女秘书Marion,在卷走了老板的钱之后逃到一家偏远的汽车旅馆,成果被由安东尼·珀金斯（詹姆斯·达西 James D’Arcy 饰）演的有精力决裂症的旅馆老板Norman残暴杀逝世。她在片中惊骇尖叫的场景曾经成为片子史上最让人难以忘却的画面之一,她也因而掉掉落了昔时金球奖跟奥斯卡最佳女主角奖的提名。

The film is about a young female researcher whose life is in danger when she discovers the pharmaceutical company she works for had developed a cure for cancer many years earlier. They haven't released it because that would destroy their chemotherapy drug sales. She must now escape and release the cure to world while the company tries to stop her.
